Secretary’s Report 2011/2012
20th Annual General Meeting - Sunday 29th January 2012
Wesley College OBU UK is now
on its 20th year of founding. The union continues to meet the
objectives under which the union was formed. The year 2011/2012 was an
eventful year for the Union.
Committee Meetings and
Membership: The OBU held six formal
meetings at committee level.
The membership of the union
closed on 15th November 2011 as per the constitution. During
the year our membership of the Union increased. My thanks to the
Membership Secretary Azahim Mohamed.
Social Events:
The 19th Annual Double Blue Ball was held on Saturday
8th October 2011 at Grange City Hotel London EC3. The dinner
dance is one of the major fund raising events in our calendar year. This
year we will be donating funds towards Wesley College swimming pool
project. The College swimming pool will be opened on founder’s day 2nd
March 2012. During the year we also, donated £2500 for the refurbishment
of the College (M H Mohamed) sports pavilion at Campbell Park. A further
donation was made towards the 25th anniversary celebrations
of the Wesley College Western band. And a donation was
also, made to fund the College ground Man’s Raja’s house. The OBU UK
hosted a dinner in honour of the Principal of Wesley College Colombo and
Reggie Bartholomeusz the President of Wesley OBU Australia during their
visit to the England. My thanks to the Social Secretary Ananda

The 16th Annual
Combined Methodist/Wesley Christmas Carol Service was held on Sunday 4th
December 2011 at Chelsea Methodist Church, Chelsea, London SW3. The
event was well attended as is customary, the evening closed with a
fellowship. The collection taken at the Carol service was in aid of Sri
Lanka Leukaemia Foundation UK.My thanks to Rex Devadason for organising
this event.
Sports activities:
The Union participated in the Festival of Cricket 2011. The team was
captained by Roshan Perera. We were able to beat the last year FoC
winner s Maris Stella but lost to Zahira in a closely fought game.
Wesley retained the M H Mohamed trophy by beating Issipathana.
We participated in the annual Touch Rugby Tournament 2011. The team was
captained by Ashley Milroy. Our team lost in the plate final. We did not
participate in this year’s football tournament. My thanks to Roshan
Perera and Niroze Ahamed
Website and Facebook:
The website is well patronized and continues to serve the Wesley
fraternity well. We are on facebook.
May I take this opportunity to thank two Wesleyites Bunny Taylor
(Canada) and Mahendra Dissanayke (SriLanka) for their continued efforts
in updating and maintaining the site.
In Memoriam:
it is with sadness that we received the news of the
death of Peter Mendis the oldest Wesleyite in London. Peter’s last wish
was to listen to the College song. Which the union was able to
arrange.Azahim Mohamed represented the union at the funeral. We convey
our deepest sympathies to the family.
Appreciation:
I must place on record our appreciation to our Patron Rev Wilfred Pile,
Our vice Patron the principal of Wesley College Colombo Dr Shanti
Mclelland. To our Treasurer Nalin Perera who discharged his duties
diligently. Our auditor for examining our books and the general
membership for their support and participation in all our activities.
The members of the Committee for their help and assistance.
I wish to pay a special tribute to our President Tharanga Jayasinghe who
held this office with dignity and respect.
Conclusion:
My final word to all our members is that we must remain united and work
with interest of our Alma mater primarily in mind. The union will
continue to do good work as it the 20th year of its
existence.

Tharanga Jayasinghe the out going President of the Wesley
