Wesley cricket captain Farveez Maharoof on a record breaking mission

  Farveez Maharoof on Cricinfo

- Sri Lanka U19 representative
- Sri Lanka U17 captain
- School batting record 243 not out  vs Richmond

Farveez Maharoof, the Wesley skipper, has gone on a record breaking mission and improved on 4 school achievements.
(a) In 1999 his bowling performance of 7 for 16 against St. Benedict’s is the best to date.
(b) In 2001 his scores of 163 against Prince of Wales and
(c) 144 against St. Joseph’s.
(d) In 2002 his score of 243 not out vs Richmond at the Galle Esplanade.

Further, he has had the distinction of being selected for overseas cricket tours with the national team on 5 occasions. In 2000 Maharoof toured Malaysia with the Under 15 team for the Asia Cup. In 2000 he toured England for the "Junior World Cup".
He was the obvious choice as Deputy Skipper of both teams.
In 2001 he toured Bangladesh with the Under 17 team for the Asia Cup. In 2001 he was selected to tour Pakistan with the Under 19 national team for the one day series. In 2002 he toured New Zealand with the Under 19 national team for the World Cup.
At Wesley, Maharoof was the obvious choice to lead the Under 13, Under 15, Under 17 and 1st XI cricket teams. He came under the guidance of 4 Wesley Cricket coaches... Kodituwakku, Russel Hamer, Bandula Warnapura and the present coach Neil Rajapakse.
It was Maharoof’s desire to take to wicket-keeping. But his coach Russel Hamer, advised him to become a pace bowler. As a six-footer, Maharoof wouldn’t have been a successful keeper.
His score of 243 not out vs Richmond consisted of 31 boundaries and 5 sixes. The venue is probably the largest ground in Sri Lanka and Maharoof’s score had eclipsed the earlier highest score by Mervyn Hamer against Kingswood at Randles hill in 1964.
The earlier highest individual score against Richmond was held by Errol Smith when he was unbeaten on 199 at the Galle Esplanade in 1961. His father Hassan Maharoof, himself a good sportsman, has been a tower of strength to his son.
