---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wesley College Colombo 1st XI Cricket Report for 2005-2006 Wesley: Senior Cricket Report from 1-Sep-2005 to 31-July-2006
As we embark on a new chapter in Wesley College senior Cricket, we have had a very successful cricket season for 1st XI Cricket (1st September 2005 to 23rd March 2006) with the guidance and able techniques of Mr. Danesh Dissanayake, who took over as the Wesley Coach from 1st April 2005. We also had a very successful Under-17 season, reaching Quarter Finals in the Astra Trophy in 2005 season, unfortunately losing to Vidyartha by 2 runs depriving a chance to the reach Semi-finals.
Together with the new coach our goal was to make Wesley one of the Top 8 schools in the country for the 2005-06 season. We were very optimistic about the 1st XI season with 3 coloursman in the side blended with youth and experienced all round side. Reaping the benefits of the actions and working towards the goals, Wesley Cricket has achieved that feat becoming the Top 5 schools in the Country being nominated for best team-all island on Observer-Bata school cricket awards 2005-06, which the judging panel comprised of past cricket and prominent cricket umpires.
Summary of Overall Performance 1st XI Cricket Team We played 15 matches out of 17 (2 cancelled due to rain), won 1 and the rest were drawn. We came 2 wickets away from beating Royal for the first time in 36 years. We also came within 7 runs short of winning with Issipathana, until the bizarre decision taken by the umpires to call off the macth due the appeal for the bad light by the fielding side (Issipathana). Note: As the rules for the last season were changed and the teams were not playing for the 1st Innings points.
Five players topped the 400 run mark, with Ryan Kern topping the run aggregate of 539 runs. Tariq Naziar topped the bowling with 36 wicktes. For the first time in history of Wesley cricket four different batsmen scored centuries in a season. They are Charitha Karunaratne (114 vs. St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia), Anoj Katipearachchi (119 vs. Kingswood), Ryan Kern (126 vs. St. Sebastian – this is record with that school) and 15 year old fresher Dulanjana Wijesinghe (111 n.o. vs. St. Thomas’s college, Matara). Lahiru Fernando excelled with bat and ball scoring 454 runs and capturing 20 wickets. Ishan Jayaratne took 15 catches during this season.
For the 2nd time in a row, Wesley made it for Pre-Quarter finals in the Lemonade Trophy - Limited Overs tournament. Anoj Katipearachchi scored a scintillating Century 110 not out, against St. Sebastian.
